A Taste of Mid-Autumn in London: CNTO London Hosts Cultural Tourism Exchange on the Thames
On 23rd September 2026, against the backdrop of the River Thames, China National Tourists Office (CNTO) London, in partnership with the UK Chinese Catering Culture Association, successfully hosted “A Taste of Mid-Autumn: Bridging Cultures Through Food”—a special cultural exchange event integrating the national promotion brands “Mid-Autumn Festival: A Moonlit Gathering” and “A Taste of China.”
Held at Peacock Restaurant London, decorated with red lanterns, mooncakes, “Mid-Autumn Festival: A Moonlit Gathering” backdrops, and “Nihao! China” panda branding, the event brought together UK and Chinese travel trade representatives, travel columnists, influencers, overseas Chinese community leaders, corporate executives, and guests from the cultural and arts sectors to mark the traditional festival while exploring new opportunities for bilateral tourism cooperation.
A Culinary Journey Across China
The event featured an award-winning chef team from the recent two editions of the UK Chinese Culinary Competition organized by the UK Chinese Catering Culture Association. Presenting classic dishes from major regional cuisines across China, the culinary team showcased master craftsmanship alongside artistic presentation, including meticulously designed peacock-themed creations that captivated guests.
During an interactive tasting session, the chefs visited guest tables to share insights into preparation techniques, signature ingredients, and regional food traditions. By answering questions about how the dishes were made and where the ingredients originated, the dining experience served as a dynamic window into China’s regional landscapes and cultural heritage.
Cultural Echoes in Song and Poetry
The evening’s celebration was further enhanced by artistic performances. American coloratura soprano Juliet delivered renditions of classic songs, including I Love You, China, while sharing her personal connection to the country and deep affection for Chinese culture.
Li Zhi, a former presenter at Jinan Television in Shandong, recited Su Shi’s classic Mid-Autumn poem Water Melody Prelude (How Rare a Moon). Set against the evening views along the Thames, the performance echoed timeless cultural resonance.
Connecting Gastronomy to Tourism Opportunities
Designed as a two-way platform for cultural tourism exchange, the event specifically welcomed 20 international guests, including UK tour operators, travel columnists, influencers, and artists.
During the discussion, several British travel representatives shared their firsthand experiences of traveling across China, highlighting local specialties they enjoyed and expressing their intention to continue promoting Chinese cuisine, scenic destinations, and cultural experiences to the UK public. Attending guests noted that Chinese gastronomy serves as a powerful cultural identity card that helps international friends experience authentic Chinese culture.
Zhang Li, Director of CNTO London stated that gastronomy is a universal cultural language and a compelling invitation to travel. By using food as a bridge and the traditional festival as a platform, CNTO London aims to showcase an authentic, dynamic, and multifaceted China, inspiring more British travelers to visit the country and strengthening inbound tourism collaboration.
CNTO London expressed sincere appreciation to all partners for their long-standing support in advancing cultural exchange and inbound tourism to China.
Special recognition was extended to the leadership and culinary team of the UK Chinese Culinary Culture Association for their preparation, Linjiangyan Restaurant for providing the riverside venue, Fenjiu International and Golden Star Beer for beverage sponsorships, as well as Bank of China and COSCO Group, strategic partners of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Looking forward, CNTO London will continue to leverage national brands such as “Mid-Autumn Festival: A Moonlit Gathering” and “A Taste of China” to build sustainable platforms for friendly dialogue, cultural integration, and mutual understanding between the UK and China.
