World Heritage – The Historic Centre of Macao
The “Historic Centre of Macao” was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 15 July 2005, becoming China’s 31st World Heritage site. The Historic Centre of Macao is a historic district centred around the old city area, connected by adjacent squares and streets. It comprises 22 buildings and 8 adjoining public squares located on the Macao Peninsula.
The Historic Centre of Macao preserves the essence of over 400 years of cultural exchange between China and the West. It is the oldest, largest, best-preserved, and most concentrated historic district in China featuring predominantly Western-style architecture complemented by Chinese and Western buildings in harmonious coexistence.
UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy
Macao’s food culture has a long and rich history, where Chinese and Western cultures coexist and blend, giving rise to a distinctive culinary heritage and food culture. On 1 November 2017, Macao was designated a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, a prestigious recognition affirming over 400 years of cultural and culinary fusion between East and West.
Among its culinary treasures, the “Macanese Gastronomy” culinary techniques were inscribed on Macao’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List as early as 2012 and were elevated to the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2021.
Macao Special Administrative Region is closely connected to Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and cities in Mainland China, offering international visitors a convenient “multi-destination” travel experience. Since February 2026, British travellers have enjoyed a 30-day visa-free entry policy to China, creating favourable conditions for combined travel to Macao, the Chinese Mainland, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Visitors can fly into Hong Kong or major mainland cities and easily extend their journey to Macao, experiencing the diverse charms of multiple destinations.
