Hometown of Confucius and Mencius

Shandong is located on the eastern coast of China, situated between Beijing and Shanghai. It covers a land area and a sea area of 158,000 square kilometers each, and has a population of over 100 million. Its GDP ranks third in China.
Shandong, known as the Hometown of Confucius and Mencius and the Land of Etiquette and Rituals, is the cradle of Confucian culture and one of the key birthplaces of Chinese civilization. Mount Tai is revered as the Foremost of the Five Sacred Mountains of China, and symbolizes Peace for the People and Prosperity for the Country. It is the first UNESCO natural and cultural heritage.
Qufu, the hometown of Confucius, is home to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site collectively known as The Three Confucian Sites. This includes the Confucius Temple, the largest temple dedicated to Confucius in the world; the Kong Family Mansion, the residence of Confucius’ direct descendants; and Confucius Cemetery, the family tomb for Confucius and his descendants.


The Yellow River, known as the Mother River of the Chinese People, surges into the sea from Shandong, creating a magnificent sight where the blue and yellow waters converge. The habitat for migratory birds at the mouth of the Yellow River has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.
Jinan, the provincial capital, is known as the City of Thousand Springs, retaining both ancient charm and modern vitality. Qingdao, famous for producing of Tsingtao beer, was also the venue for the 2008 Olympic sailing competition and is a popular seaside tourist destination in China.
